The Republic of Haiti occupies the western portion of Hispaniola, the West Indian island that it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. Because of political unrest, UN peacekeeping forces have controlled Haiti since March 31, 1995. Glen and Rachel Smith founded the UPC of Haiti in 1966. The Daniel Vannoys, the first resident UPCI missionaries, arrived in 1978. According to the 2006 Annual Field Report, the UPC of Haiti has 50,614 constituents, 661 licensed ministers, and 585 churches and preaching points. Last year 12,952 Haitians were baptized in Jesus’ name and 17,439 received the Holy Ghost.
